Chronological overview of historical highlights

1973

 

Palle Petersen begins his taekwondo training under Gunnar Sørensen in Sonderborg and Oksbøl.

1974

 

Palle Petersen founds Ballerup Taekwondo Club. First official training takes place in Måløvhallen (sports hall) on September 2nd.

1975

 

New classes for boys and girls below 15 years are started.

 

 

Besides training locations in both Måløv and Ballerup, affiliates are opened in Ølstykke, Skovlunde, Herlev and Albertslund. Because of that, the club name is changes to Copenhagen Taekwondo Club.

 

 

The club starts collaboration with master Shin Boo Young from Germany.

1976

 

Master Shin Boo Young gives the club the Korean name “Hwa-Rang” and the club name is changed to Hwa-Rang Taekwondo Club.

1977

 

Ballerup participates with 4 fighters at the 3rd World Championship in Chicago. Dang Dinh Ky Thuy gets a 4th place.

 

 

Ballerup and about 12 other clubs are forced to leave the Danish Taekwondo Federation and return to the Danish Judo Federation (the karate section).

1978

 

The club gets its own facilities at the club centre Tapeten.

1979

 

 

1980

 

Laila Jensen wins the European Championship. Five other national team fighters from Ballerup win silver and bronze.

 

 

Ballerup and the other Hwa-Rang clubs are united with the Danish Taekwondo Federation and the Danish Taekwondo Union.

1981

 

 

1982

 

Palle Petersen stops in Ballerup after many years of hard and successful work. Holger Løhndorf and Leif Marek take over the club management.

Randi West Hansen is selected onto the Danish National Technical Team.

1995

 

Claus D. Thomsen and Rasmus Petersen take over the management of the club.

1996

 

Claus D. Thomsen and Peter H. Kristensen are selected onto the Danish National Technical Team.

1997

 

Randi West Hansen gets a 4th in synchron poomse at the European Championship.

 

 

After many years without organizing any tournaments the Regional Technical Championship (Zealand) is organized in Ballerup. A new tournament concept, which is created by Claus D. Thomsen, becomes a success.

1998

 

Peter Kristensen and Jens Hyldahl are promoted to 4th dan.

1999

 

The club logo gets a face lift.

 

 

Ballerup celebrates its 25 years anniversary. About 35 black belts from the “old days” participate in a special training session with Shin Boo Young.

 

 

The club gets a website.

 

 

The old traditional class structure is changed to an integrated "stair" structure with crossed classes.

2000

 

Randi West Hansen, Claus D. Thomsen and Peter H. Kristensen are selected onto the Danish Taekwondo Demonstration Team.

 

 

Claus D. Thomsen, Karsten W. Nielsen and Heidi Gøse start to rebuild the club facilities.

2001

 

Claus D. Thomsen is nominated "Club manager of the year" by the city mayor.

 

 

Members on the Danish National Technical Team and the Danish Taekwondo Demonstration Team increases as Trine B. Jørgensen moves from Taastrup to Ballerup Taekwondo Club. In the same period also Ali Ijaz is selected to the Demonstration Team.

 

 

Claus D. Thomsen and Peter H. Kristensen win the European Technical Championship. Randi West Hansen and Trine B. Jørgensen win silver and bronze. The Danish Team gets a prize of honor from the German Interior Minister.

2002

 

Jean Schiller, Rasmus Petersen and Claus D. Thomsen finish the rebuilding of the club facilities.

 

 

Allan B. Pedersen is selected onto the Danish National Fighting Team. He was also on the team in 1991-1994.

 

 

Jesper Bistrup is elected for the Athletics Committee in the Danish Taekwondo Federation.

 

 

Randi West Hansen, Claus D. Thomsen and Peter H. Kristensen participate in a large Taekwondo Festival in Korea and win several disciplines at an international tournament with participants from all over the world.

 

 

Rasmus Petersen and Claus D. Thomsen are promoted to 4th dan black belt.

 

 

Randi West Hansen hired as assistant coach for the Danish National Technical Team.

 

 

Most winning club at the National Technical Championship (3 years in a row).

2003

 

Allan B. Pedersen makes an international break through when he reaches the 1/4 finale at US Open in Las Vegas.

 

 

Allan B. Pedersen participates in the World Fighting Championship. However, he doesn't gets to fight because an injury during warm-up.

 

 

Claus D. Thomsen and Peter H. Kristensen regain their title as European Champions with their synchron team. They also win the mix team (5 persons) competition together with Randi West Hansen a.o. Randi also wins bronze individually. Trine B. Jørgensen wins silver in synchron.

 

 

The most successful year ever for the club: 110 medals among them 55 of gold.

2004

 

Randi West Hansen is promoted to 4th dan black belt.

 

 

Peter H. Kristensen and Claus D. Thomsen retire with their synchron team after 7½ years. They were undefeated for almost 5 years. Among their 50 gold medals (mostly from international tournaments) they won Korean Open and the European Championship 3 times.

 

 

The newsletter Hwa-Rang News replaces the old club magazine.

 

 

The club celebrates its 30 years anniversary. Over 40 black belts from the "old days" participate in a special training with Shin Boo Young.

 

 

Claus D. Thomsen wins speed and show break at Scandinavian Open, which gives him gold medal nr. 99 and 100 of his taekwondo career.

 

 

Henriette Dalsten is selected onto the Danish National Technical Team. Randi West Hansen and Peter H. Kristensen retire from the team.

2005

 

Rasmus Petersen is nominated "Manager of the year" by the Danish Taekwondo Federation.

 

 

Claus D. Thomsen is elected for the executive committee of the Danish Taekwondo Federation.

 

 

Trine B. Jørgensen wins bronze at the European Technical Championship.

 

 

Allan B. Pedersen was promoted to 4th dan black.

 

 

Claus D. Thomsen wins the free style discipline at the Danish Technical Championship. This is a historical win since the club now has won the Danish Championship in all 9 taekwondo disciplines.

 

 

Trine B. Jørgensen and Claus D. Thomsen retire from the Danish National Technical Team.

 

 

Trine B. Jørgensen is live on national TV with the Danish Taekwondo Demonstration Team in the broadcast Sport 2005.

2006

 

Allan B. Pedersen participates in both US Open and the European Fighting Championship.

 

 

A new suite collection is presented at the clubs annual general meeting.

 

 

The number of black belts turns 100.

 

 

Dang Dinh Ky Thuy, John Villy Scheerer and Claus D. Thomsen are given silver needle of honor by the Danish Taekwondo Federations. Bronze needles of honor are given to Palle Petersen, Rasmus Pedersen, Allan B. Pedersen and Jesper Bistrup for their great work for Danish taekwondo during the years.

 

 

Palle Petersen meets with Theo P. Salm after 31 years at the Easter Camp in Solrød. Theo P. Salm was one of the two Dutch guys who introduced taekwondo in Denmark back in 1968. Theo P. Salm broke with Danish taekwondo after the Danish summer camp in 1975 because the former president Gunnar Sørensen of the Danish Taekwondo Federation wrote him a letter telling him that he was no longer welcome. That was done in a mysteriously way. Not even Palle Petersen knew about it even though he was vice-president in the federation at that time.

 

 

Claus D. Thomsen trains with Theo P. Salm at a Tang Soo Do training camp in Jutland.

 

 

Allan Bjørk Pedersen participates in World Cup, Bangkok.

 

 

Claus D. Thomsen resigns from the executive committee of the Danish Taekwondo Federation.

2007

 

Allan Bjørk Pedersen wins silver medal (after 5 fights) at Trelleborg Open.

 

 

A two-day training event for senior athletes (30+) takes place in Ballerup with participants and instructors from Herlev, Hvalsø and Solrød. The event is a big success.

 

 

At Dutch Open Allan Bjørk Pedersen wins a fight (7 points lead) in only 42 seconds.

 

 

For the first time in many years Ballerup visits Chung Un Taekwondo Club in Sonderborg. Along with Claus D. Thomsen is Thuy Dang. Together with Allan Paulsen, Sonderborg, they agree to revive the network and co-operation between clubs and persons related to the old Hwa-Rang Denmark.

   

Phase 2 of the rebuilding project (changing rooms) is completed.

 

 

Allan Bjørk Pedersen participates at the World Championship in Beijing, China.
